I’ve always been something of a pessimist with a natural tendency to see the worst in situations, places, and people. I’ve always liked to consider it astute realism, and in reality, who wouldn't? We all like to be in the middle ground, to be normal, to observe the extremes from a secure center where we are safe from the peering eyes of others. The truth is we all just want to live normal, happy lives. The truth (or simply my pessimism speaking) is that this will not happen to all, or even the majority of us. We will live lives separated from the rest of the world by our quirks and differences, and will experience times, seasons, and years that are not happy.

However, I can attest that while we may all be different, we are all alike too. We all love, hate, laugh, and cry: we are all Human. This is too often forgotten as we encourage diversity, and at the same time ostracize those different from us. As we live on the broken eggshells of diversity and the perils of its extremes we forget that no matter what differences come between us we are at heart all the same.

As a man distinctly separated from normality with a biracial heritage and gay lifestyle I have always felt alienated from the world around me. I wanted to create a space, an area where I could feel free to be myself, to say what was on my mind, and to not worry about what others thought of me. I just wanted a place to be me.
